Getting Married at Edinburgh City Chambers: Everything You Need to Know

With historic charm, city centre location and incredible photo opportunities just steps away, it’s no wonder that Edinburgh City Chambers is an iconic wedding venue.

I’m Lauren, an Edinburgh-based Scottish wedding photographer, and in this blog post, we’re going to go through everything you need to know about getting married at Edinburgh City Chambers.

Whether you’ve just got engaged (congrats!), or you know you want to get married at City Chambers, this guide will take you through the benefits of the venue, how to choose a room, the photo opps and more.

Why Choose a City Chambers Wedding?

Edinburgh City Chambers is on the historic Royal Mile, making it a fantastic choice for couples who want the grandeur of an old building and the convenience of a city centre location.

  • Historical elegance. Edinburgh’s architecture is beautifully eclectic, from Medieval tenements to Georgian neoclassical townhouses, making it an incredibly romantic backdrop for your wedding.

  • Prime location. Situated in the heart of old town, Edinburgh City Chambers is walking distance from the castle and iconic photo spots like Carlton Hill. There’s loads of great hotels and eating spots nearby too!

  • Affordability. City Chambers is a registry office, making it a cost-effective option if your budget is tight. They typically do ceremonies every 45 minutes, making it highly available.

  • Versatile spaces. There are multiple rooms available, from the Wee Neuk for the couple and two witnesses, to the Council Chamber that’s suitable for up to 110 guests.

  • Protection against bad weather. City Chambers is perfect, even in the rain. With stunning indoor stairwells and sheltered outdoor arches, there are plenty of photo opportunities whatever the weather.

The City Chambers area can get incredibly busy during the fringe festival in August, making it difficult to achieve the photos that you might want.

Choosing a City Chambers Ceremony Room

The Wee Neuk - For the couple & two witnesses

Perfect for elopements and those after intimate ceremonies, The Wee Neuk is the City Chambers smallest room. It’s simple, elegant and stress-free.

Alexander Suite - Up to 36 guests

This suite is a timeless, intimate space on the ground floor, made up of the ceremony room, a waiting lounge for guests and a small room to meet the registrar before the ceremony itself.

European Suite - Up to 70 guests

If you’re looking for something a little more traditional, a little more regal in style, then this might be the room for you. With wood panelling, huge oil paintings and a gorgeous view of the courtyard, the European Suite is perfect for those after a little grandeur.

Council Chamber - Up to 110 guests

Want the whole shebang? This grand room has a domed ceiling, murals, an impressive fireplace and room for all your loved ones.

Where to Get Ready Before Your City Chambers Wedding

One of the advantages of getting married at Edinburgh City Chambers is the choice of getting ready options within walking distance. If you’re not local, you can choose from one of the many boutique hotels, apartments or Airbnbs nearby. Places like The Scotsman, Virgin Hotel, and The Hoxton, are popular.

If you want getting ready photos, then look for a place that has good natural light, neutral decor and a bit of space to move around - this works beautifully for relaxed, documentary style photography like mine!

Where to Celebrate After Your City Chambers Wedding

Whatever your vibe, Edinburgh has lots of options for celebrating after the ceremony.

For an intimate dinner for two, I recommend:

For a small group celebration, I would choose:

For something larger or more of a party, I would go for:

  • The Cannonball Restaurant for food, followed by hiring a nearby bar or private space in the Old Town or city centre to keep the party going
